As you might know, we at Mailbox Germany are, of course, Germans. So we often hear stereotypes. But first things first: No, we do not wear Lederhosen nor do all of us like beer. Yes, beer is big part of German culture and (liquid) cuisine but not everyone in Germany likes it.

Clichés about Germans

German YouTuber Don’t Trust The Rabbit took some work out of our hands and made a nice list of stereotypes about Germany:

All these clichés are just in comparison. There are many cultures who are known for punctuality, strict working ethics and so on. But most often we hear about our aggressive or harsh-sounding language. Standard German has some of these cracking pharyngal sounds but much of it depends on how you pronounce something. And again, we have many, oh so many dialects, varieties, and other forms of how to pronounce something.

A lot of these slight or big differences have to do with our history. Whereas other nations like France are a united country since the middle ages, Germany was split in many kingdoms, counties, and principalities up until the Prussian-led unificationof 1871. Then again, it took about 30 years until the first complete grammar compendium, the so-called Duden, was published in 1900. You could say, in a way, we Germans have a common language just for over a hundred years.

We are not all the same

As with every culture, we are not one homogenous people. The same way our language works is how we work as a people: Some are punctual, tidy, and very orderly. Others are not.

What are stereotypes about Germany you know? Are they good or bad? What do you think of them? Please let us know in the comments section!
